Technology and the new digital economy have become the pervasive drivers of business transformation and strategy–evolving to dominate every corporate agenda. In the first of a new series of high-level, invitation-only events under the umbrella theme ‘Tomorrow’s Global Business’, the Financial Times and Paul Hastings gathered senior executives and legal decision makers from corporations, investors and disruptors to discuss how incumbents of the tech industry could ensure growth in the face of competition from successful newcomers that are upending business models, and the regulatory, financing, talent and legal pressures that are exerting their own dynamic on the sector.

We explored:

  • How incumbents of the tech industry could remain nimble and reinvent or protect themselves to ensure growth in the face of competition from successful newcomers upending business models
  • How successful tech-related companies could raise capital, and how their choices impact ownership and control

Mark Garrett

Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer
Adobe Systems

As Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer, Mark Garrett supports all facets of Adobe’s growth agenda. He leads worldwide finance and operations activities as well as corporate development, including corporate strategy, mergers and acquisitions, and strategic partnerships. With more than 25 years of financial management experience in the technology sector, Mr Garrett has worked with many of the industry’s leading companies. Before joining Adobe in February 2007, he served as Senior Vice President and Chief Financial Officer of EMC's Software Group, the multi-billion dollar software group of EMC Corporation. Prior to EMC, Mr Garrett was Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer of Documentum. During his tenure at Documentum, he was instrumental in closing several acquisitions and ultimately in the sale of Documentum to EMC. Previous accounting and finance management positions include tenures at IBM and Cadence Design Systems. Mr Garrett currently serves on the board of directors for Model N, Inc, a provider of revenue management solutions, Pure Storage Inc, an enterprise storage company, the Adobe Foundation and the Children’s Discovery Museum of San Jose. He holds Bachelor's degrees in Accounting and Marketing from Boston University and a Master's degree in Business Administration from Marist College.

John Rainey

Chief Financial Officer

John Rainey joined PayPal in 2015 as Chief Financial Officer, overseeing the company’s financial stability and growth. Part of the management team, he leads PayPal’s financial operations, regional finance teams and investor relations. Mr Rainey brings more than 20 years of financial management experience. Prior to PayPal, he was Executive Vice President and CFO at United Continental Holdings Inc’s United Airlines, leading the most profitable era in the company's history. In this role, he was responsible for the company’s overall financial strategy and corporate strategy function, overseeing corporate finance, treasury, financial planning and analysis, tax, accounting, investor relations, strategic planning and risk management. He began his professional career at Ernst & Young LLP in Houston. Mr Rainey was an inaugural member of the CNBC Global CFO Council, an elite group of chief financial officers representing public and private companies from various major sectors. As a leader on the March of Dimes national board of trustees, he was named the 2015 national chair of the March for Babies – the nation’s biggest fundraiser for maternal and infant health. Mr Rainey earned Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Business Administration from Baylor University. He is a Certified Public Accountant.

Dennis Woodside

Chief Operating Officer

Dennis Woodside is the Chief Operating Officer of Dropbox. He leads much of Dropbox’s day-to-day operations, overseeing and growing sales, partnerships and user operations. Mr Woodside came to Dropbox from Google, where he served as CEO of Motorola Mobility after overseeing the company’s acquisition by Google in 2012. Previously, he was Google’s Vice President of Americas Operations, managing the company’s relationships with partners and advertising agencies. In the US alone, Mr Woodside and his team drove revenue from $10.8 billion to $17.5 billion in fewer than three years. Mr Woodside started his career at Google in 2003, spearheading investment across Europe, the Middle East and Africa. Prior to joining Google, he was an associate partner at McKinsey & Company, where he led operational and strategy projects for multinational clients in the technology and media industries.

Paul Saffo

Chair - Future Studies and Forecasting
Singularity University

Paul Saffo is a Silicon Valley-based forecaster with over three decades' experience helping corporate and governmental clients understand and respond to the dynamics of large-scale, long-term change. He chairs the Future Studies track at Singularity University and teaches at Stanford, where he is a Consulting Associate Professor in the School of Engineering. Mr Saffo is also a non-resident Senior Fellow at the Atlantic Council, a Fellow of the Royal Swedish Academy of Engineering Sciences, and sits on the boards of the Long Now Foundation, and the Bay Area Council Economic Institute. Previously, he was the founding chair of the Samsung Science Board, and a member of the AT&T Technical Advisory Board. His essays have appeared in a wide range of publications including the Harvard Business Review, Foreign Policy, Fortune, Wired, the Los Angeles Times, Newsweek, the New York Times and the Washington Post. Mr Saffo holds degrees from Harvard College, Cambridge University and Stanford University.

Greg Becker

Silicon Valley Bank

Greg Becker has been a champion of the innovation economy since he joined Silicon Valley Bank in 1993 as a banker to fast-growing technology companies. Today, he is the President and CEO of the world’s only bank dedicated to the innovation sector around the world. Silicon Valley Bank’s mission is to help increase the probability of its innovative clients’ success, globally. Under Mr Becker’s leadership, Silicon Valley Bank’s growth rate has continued to outpace other banks. It has been named one of the fastest growing public companies in the US and one of the best places to work. Silicon Valley Bank is also an advocate for entrepreneurs, their investors, and corporates in the innovation sector internationally. Mr Becker was the President, Chief Operations Officer and Chief Banking Officer of the Bank prior to taking on the CEO role. Earlier in his career, he ran the company’s Venture Capital Group where he was responsible for building relationships with and investing in venture capital and private equity firms across the US. Mr Becker was also a Co-founder and Managing Director of SVB Capital, which manages some of the world’s top-rated venture fund-of-funds and co-investment funds, and he was a member of Silicon Valley Bank’s Operating Committee. He is Chairman of the Silicon Valley Leadership Group. He earned a Bachelor’s degree in Business from Indiana University.

Thomas Brown

Paul Hastings

Thomas Brown is a Partner in the Antitrust and Competition and the Global Banking and Payment Systems practices of Paul Hastings. He is also a member of the firm’s Technology, Media & Telecoms industry group and is resident in the San Francisco office. Mr Brown advises dynamic companies of all kinds on competition, consumer protection and privacy issues, with a specific focus on firms in the financial services industry. In addition to strategically advising payment systems and financial services clients across a broad spectrum of regulatory issues, he has litigated notable antitrust cases, including class actions, in the financial services industry for more than 15 years. Previously, Mr Brown was Vice President, Senior Counsel at Visa USA Inc. There he was responsible for managing the aftermath of the settlement in In re Visa Check/MasterMoney Antitrust Litigation, including the dozens of consumer class actions that were filed following the settlement. He was also deeply involved in the company’s transformation from a co-op to a shareholder owned company. Mr Brown received his JD degree from the University of Chicago Law School and an AB degree from Columbia University. 

Julia Hu

Having suffered from a chronic condition all her life, Julia Hu started Lark Technologies to make healthcare universally accessible and caring. Preinstalled on all Samsung phones, and available on the App Store for iOS and Android App on Google play, the Lark Chat app is a personal AI health coach that texts people to help them get fitter, lose weight, and prevent and manage chronic diseases -- anytime, anywhere. A serial entrepreneur, Ms Hu previously ran her own clean-tech startup, global incubator Clean Tech Open, and worked in China to build consumer electronics with D.light Design. She received two degrees from Stanford and has half of an MBA from MIT Sloan School of Management. Ms Hu mentors startups as an EIR at Stanford’s StartX incubator and faculty at Singularity University. She is #1 in Inc. Magazine's 2015 Top 10 Women in Tech to Watch, and one of Inc. Magazine’s 30 under 30, and speaks on the future of digital health and IoT. Ms Hu lives in Mountain View, California, and stays fit by attending hip hop dance classes and chatting with Lark about her snacks.

Paul Kwan

Managing Director, Head of West Coast Technology Banking
Morgan Stanley

Paul Kwan is the Head of West Coast Technology Banking for Morgan Stanley, helping to advise leading technology companies on their strategic and financial objectives. Mr Kwan has been focused on the software and Internet markets for the past two decades, and most recently, helped lead the IPOs for Atlassian, Square, Twitter and Facebook, as well as the most recent private financings for Airbnb and Uber. Mr Kwan and Morgan Stanley have been particularly focused on strategic M&A in the Internet and Software as a Service (SaaS) markets. Morgan Stanley has been the sell-side advisor on nearly every major digital marketing transaction in recent years, including the sales of aQuantive, DoubleClick, Omniture, Conversant (ValueClick), Admob, BlueKai, Brightroll, Marketshare, and, as well as advising on WhatsApp’s sale to Facebook, Zappos’ sale to Amazon, and Braintree’s sale to eBay. In SaaS software M&A, Morgan Stanley has been sell-side advisor on more SaaS M&A deals than any other advisor, having sold Ariba to SAP, SuccessFactors to SAP, Omniture to Adobe, RightNow to Oracle, Responsys to Oracle, ATG to Oracle, Kronos to Blackstone, FieldGlass to SAP, Constant Contact to Endurance and Eloqua to Oracle. Over the course of his career, Mr Kwan has helped raise over $75 billion in financings for global Internet and software leaders, including Facebook, Google, Netflix, Pandora, Rakuten, Twitter, Groupon, Zalando, Criteo, Adobe, Domo, Microsoft, Oracle and Zendesk. He received a Bachelor's degree in Computer Science and Economics from Stanford University.

Mood Rowghani

Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers (KPCB)

Mood Rowghani joined Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers in 2011. He focuses on investments in the firm’s digital practice, targeting high-growth Internet companies that have achieved strong adoption and scale. Before joining KPCB, Mr Rowghani worked for five years at Summit Partners, where he led the firm’s Internet and digital media practice in North America. He was actively involved across Summit’s Internet portfolio, including serving as a director at Announce Media, where he helped lead the take-private acquisition of Answers Corp (Nasdaq: ANSW). Earlier in his career, Mr Rowghani was with Highland Capital Partners, where he was actively involved with Vistaprint (Nasdaq: VPRT) and Coremetrics (acquired by IBM). He also spent two years at McKinsey & Company, where he served Global 1000 clients in the high-tech industry. He has a BA degree from the University of Texas and an MBA from Stanford University’s Graduate School of Business.

Sherrese Smith

Sherrese Smith is a Partner in the Technology, Media, and Telecommunications (TMT) and Privacy and Cybersecurity practices at Paul Hastings and is resident in the Washington, DC office. She is a highly regarded lawyer with significant private sector and high-level government experience in media, telecommunications, mobile and digital technology as well as privacy and data security. Prior to joining Paul Hastings, Ms Smith served as Chief Counsel for Chairman Julius Genachowski at the Federal Communications Commission, where she was responsible for the FCC’s overall policy agenda for all media, telecom and mobile spectrum, privacy, and data security policy issues. Prior to joining the FCC, she was Vice President and General Counsel of Washington Post Digital. In addition to her media and technology practice, Ms Smith frequently counsels companies on a range of privacy and data security matters, such as advising companies on the creation of compliance programs to reflect industry best practices, data governance issues, emerging privacy issues and cybersecurity vulnerabilities, and compliance with the European Union Data Protection Directive and privacy legislation in a variety of foreign jurisdictions. Ms Smith is a frequent panelist and presenter at national media, technology and privacy conferences and seminars. She received her JD degree from Northwestern University School of Law and a BA degree from the University of South Carolina.

Richard Waters

West Coast Editor
Financial Times

Richard Waters is the West Coast Managing Editor for the Financial Times. His beat covers the technology industry. Before moving to the West Coast, Mr Waters was based in the FT’s New York office for nine years. His roles there included Wall Street reporter, New York bureau chief, and the FT’s first information industries editor, overseeing global coverage of technology, telecommunications and media. Mr Waters previously worked at the FT in London where he held a number of positions, including editor of international capital markets, securities industry correspondent and accountancy and taxation correspondent. Before working for the FT, Mr Waters worked as a reporter and editor for several financial magazines. He also worked for two years at Lloyd’s Bank International. In 2004, Mr Waters was awarded Corporate Finance Reporter of the year for his coverage of Google’s IPO. He was shortlisted for the Business & Finance Reporter of the Year award at the British Press Awards in 2003 and won the award in 1992 as part of a team covering the BCCI scandal. In 1988, Mr Waters was named Accountancy Journalist of the Year.
